BMW S1000RR Ignition Recall: What BT Moto Customers Need to Know

BT Moto has been receiving a large number of calls and emails regarding the BMW S1000RR ignition recall / ignition campaign and what owners with a BT Moto ECU tune need to do before and after visiting their BMW dealer.

If you own a 2020+ BMW S1000RR K67 with a BT Moto tune and your motorcycle has been identified by BMW as needing the ignition recall performed, please read the information below before taking your motorcycle to the dealer.

At this time, the affected motorcycles we are seeing are K67-generation BMW S1000RR models, 2020 and newer. Recall and campaign eligibility is ultimately VIN-specific, so owners should confirm their individual motorcycle with BMW before scheduling service.

Does the BMW Ignition Recall Affect My BT Moto Tune?

The important issue for a tuned motorcycle is not simply the physical ignition repair itself.

BMW may perform ECU programming or a software update as part of the dealer recall/service procedure.

Whenever BMW updates the motorcycle's ECU software, the ECU software version can change. Your existing BT Moto calibration and handheld were configured around the ECU software version that was on the motorcycle when it was originally tuned.

Because of this, you should always return your motorcycle completely to stock with your BT Moto handheld BEFORE bringing it to BMW for the ignition recall.

Do not leave the BT Moto calibration installed while the dealer performs an ECU/software update.

What Should I Do Before My BMW Dealer Appointment?

If your 2020+ BMW S1000RR K67 is currently BT Moto tuned:

1. Connect your BT Moto handheld tuner.

2. Return the motorcycle completely to the stock calibration.

3. Confirm the stock flash completes successfully. Choose total write if that is prompted.

4. Bring the motorcycle to BMW and have the ignition recall/campaign performed.

Returning the bike to stock before dealer service is important whenever BMW may update or program the ECU.

What Happens After BMW Performs the Ignition Recall?

After the dealer completes the recall, do not simply attempt to reinstall your previous tuned file if BMW updated the ECU software.

The motorcycle will now contain a newer BMW ECU software version than it had when your original BT Moto calibration was created.

Your BT Moto handheld will consequently report that the ECU software is different or incompatible with the files currently associated with the device.

This is expected when BMW has updated the ECU. It does not mean your BT Moto handheld is damaged.

The device and calibration simply need to be reset/reconfigured for the ECU's new software version.

BT Moto Reset Process After the BMW Ignition Recall

Once BMW has completed the recall:

1. Bring the motorcycle home with the BMW software installed.
2. Order our reset linked below
3. Await email confirmation of the reset procedure
4. Connect your BT Moto handheld.
5. Follow the BT Moto reset/re-tune procedure 
6. We will configure the device and calibration for the ECU software version now installed on the motorcycle. This process will work just like the first time we tuned it.
7. Once the process is completed, you are good to go.

Do not attempt to work around an incompatible software message or repeatedly flash old files. Please wait for us to provide the proper reset process after you order the reset.

$100 Discount for BMW S1000RR Ignition Recall Customers

We understand that this recall is outside of the customer's control.

For customers who need their BT Moto tuning reset/reconfigured specifically because their BMW dealer performed the S1000RR ignition recall and updated the ECU software, BT Moto is currently offering a $100 discount on the applicable reset/re-tune process.

This discount is specifically intended to help existing BT Moto customers affected by the BMW ignition recall.

What If I Already Went to the Dealer Without Returning the Bike to Stock?

You will need to order the re-license linked below, in addition to the reset, the total cost will be $300 in this case. This added $200 is only needed if you did not put the stock tune on the bike before the update. We have to unlock/re-license the device with the manufacturer in addition to our retune fee.

Do not panic and do not repeatedly attempt to flash the motorcycle. Simply order the reset link and re-license link to complete the procedure.

Does This Affect the BMW M1000RR, S1000R or M1000R?

At this time, the ignition recall cases BT Moto is handling are for the 2020+ K67 BMW S1000RR.

We are not currently applying this notice broadly to other BMW S/M models.

BMW recall and service campaigns are VIN-specific, so the definitive way to determine whether your motorcycle is affected is to check your VIN directly with BMW or your authorized BMW Motorrad dealer.

How Do I Check Whether My S1000RR Has the Ignition Recall?

Use your motorcycle's 17-digit VIN to check with BMW or contact your local BMW Motorrad dealer.

Do not assume that your motorcycle is included solely because it is a particular model year. BMW determines recall/campaign eligibility by VIN.

Important Reminder for ALL BT Moto BMW Customers

The procedure above also highlights an important rule that applies beyond this specific ignition recall:

Any time your BMW is going to the dealer and there is a possibility that the ECU will be programmed or updated, return the motorcycle to stock first.

This includes recalls, service campaigns, dealer programming and other software updates.

If BMW installs a newer ECU software version, your BT Moto calibration will need to be updated before it can be reinstalled.
