Swapping the intake stacks on a 2021+ Kawasaki ZX-10R or ZX-10RR is one of the higher-value jobs you can do at home with basic hand tools. The stacks sit under the fuel tank inside the airbox, which puts most of the work in reaching them and leaves the swap itself quick.
This guide walks through the full process on a Gen 6 or Gen 7 ZX-10R. The job runs from removing the seat and side panels to lifting the fuel tank, opening the airbox, and finally seating the new stacks in the correct orientation.
Take your time on the fuel line, keep shop cloths nearby, and work methodically. Each connector, tab, and bolt handled in order keeps the process straightforward from start to finish.
Before the first bolt turns, however, it pays to get the hardware organized, since a teardown this deep goes back together faster when everything stays in order on the way out. A clear space set up ahead of time saves the hunting later.
As just mentioned, the entire job runs on a handful of Allen keys, a Phillips screwdriver, and a small flathead or pick for the connectors. Lay everything out before you start so each tool is ready when the tank is loose.

These tools cover the full teardown and reassembly. Keep the hardware grouped by section as it comes off the bike, especially the tank bolts and airbox screws, so everything returns to the same place cleanly.
The seat comes off first to clear access to the panels behind it. Put your key in the seat lock, turn it, and lift. There is a panel behind the seat held by two small tabs. Pop those tabs, work the seat slightly, and fish the panel out.
A lock tab holds the seat itself. Press it over and back to release, then lift the seat up, back, and out.
Both side panels and the front cover come off to reach the tank bolts. You are taking the same panels off both sides of the bike.
• Side panels: Each one is held by two 4 mm Allen bolts. With those out, lift at the rear and push forward toward the front of the bike. There is Velcro and a few tabs behind the panel, so work slowly. Two rubber grommets and one tab hold it on, so free the grommets and pull the panel forward until it releases.
• Front cover: Two more 4 mm Allen bolts hold the front cover, one per side. Once they are out, gently pry the cover up. Two rubber grommets underneath hold it, so lift steadily until it pops free.
The tank lifts out after a few bolts and three sets of connections come loose, so this step deserves the slowest pace of the job. Pull the mounting hardware first: an 8 mm Allen bolt on each side, plus the 5 mm Allen bolts at the rear of the tank.
With the bolts out, work the connections in this order:
• Fuel pump connector: At the back of the tank, slip a small flathead under the tab, lift, and pull the connector free.
• EVAP lines: Two of them, one per side. Pull them off by hand. A tight line usually loosens once you squeeze the metal clips with small pliers and slide them down.
• Fuel line: Look for the brown connector below the tank. Lay shop cloths underneath to catch drips, then lift the brown tab to release the line and pull it off.
Once everything is disconnected, lift the front of the tank, tilt it forward, and lift it up and out of the bike.
Eight Phillips screws hold the airbox lid, and a couple of brackets sit in the way of the trickier ones. Removing a small screw to slide a bracket clear makes the corner screws much easier to reach. Unplug the IAT sensor and the module near it to free up room while you work.
There is one screw in the center of the lid that is easy to miss, so account for all eight before you try to lift the lid. With the screws out, raise the lid. A couple of connectors may still be attached, so move those clear, then lift the lid up and over and set it aside.
The modules sit on a bracket held by rubber tabs and can move out of the work area while staying connected. Unfold the rubber cover to reach them, then pull each module straight out of its rubber tab and set it to the side. That clears the airbox and exposes the velocity stacks and the air filter underneath.
Each set of factory stacks is held by three Phillips screws, and the orientation matters for reassembly. Note it now: the taller stacks sit in the center, and the shorter stacks sit on the outside. The BT Moto stacks go in the same layout.
The two outer screws back out easily. The center screw is the tricky one, held by a tab. Pull out on the tab with a flathead or your finger while pressing up on the screw from behind, and it will pop free.
The BT Moto stacks are labeled left and right facing the front of the bike, with the taller side facing inboard. That stepped layout, tall inside and short outside, helps the stacks add top-end power while preserving low-end drive, so getting each one in the correct position matters just as much as seating it properly.
Gently insert each stack into the rubber pipes below. A dry airbox may need a small amount of oil on the stacks to help them slide into the cone. Work them down until they are fully seated, then start the bolts and work around each set evenly.
Once the bolts are down, the stacks should sit cleanly into the throttle bodies with even seating all the way around each edge.
With the stacks in and the airbox still open, this is the easiest moment to fit a fresh air filter. Pull the old one up and out, drop the new one in, and the intake service gets handled during the same teardown.
Everything goes back in the reverse order it came apart. Airbox lid and its eight screws, modules back on their tabs, sensors reconnected, then the fuel tank with all three sets of connections, the front cover, side panels, and seat.
If a panel or connector fights you during reassembly, run the teardown steps backward and let the tabs guide the part back into place. Double-check that the fuel line and EVAP connections are fully seated before the tank goes down, because those connections deserve a clean final check before the bodywork goes back on.
The stacks themselves take minutes; the tank and airbox work are the real time cost. That trade pays off because the new stacks smooth the air feeding each throttle body, helping turn cleaner intake flow into more power across the midrange and top-end.
Pair the stacks with a calibration built for the added airflow, and the gains hit even harder. Intake hardware and ECU mapping work as one system, especially on a modern ZX-10R where the factory calibration leaves room in the throttle response, fueling, and power delivery.
