2024 Ducati Panigale V4R Dyno Results: Horsepower Gains From ECU Flashing and Race Gas Tuning

The 2024 Ducati Panigale V4R is one of the most serious production motorcycles Ducati has ever sold. It is a 998cc homologation superbike built for World Superbike rules, wrapped in street-legal bodywork, and sold to riders who want the closest thing possible to a Ducati race bike with a license plate.

It is also expensive, hot, aggressive, maintenance-heavy, and not especially friendly at low RPM. That is part of the V4R experience. This is not a casual street bike. This is a motorcycle designed to live above 10,000 RPM.

That is exactly why we wanted to test it properly. For this review, we rode the 2024 Ducati Panigale V4R stock, tested it on GPS, ran it on the dyno, compared the original Ducati file against a competitor tune, flashed it with our BT Moto 2023-2024 Ducati V4R Stage 1+ Performance Calibration with handheld tuner, and then tested it again on the road.

The result was the most powerful motorcycle we had put on that dyno at the time: 215 rear-wheel horsepower on 91 octane pump gas with a slip-on exhaust.

What Makes the 2024 V4R Different?

The 2023-2024 Ducati Panigale V4R may look similar to the earlier 2019-2022 V4R, but it is not the same motorcycle. Ducati made several changes that affect how the bike produces power and how it behaves on track.

Some of the most important updates include:

 998cc Desmosedici Stradale R engine built for World Superbike homologation.

 Revised intake horns designed to support more high-RPM power.

 Updated intake camshaft for stronger top-end output.

 Different gearing in first, second, and sixth gear for track use.

 Higher seat position compared to earlier models for more aggressive corner entry.

 High-RPM capability that separates the V4R from the standard 1,103cc Panigale V4.

 Dry clutch and race-focused hardware that make the bike feel more special, but also more demanding.

The standard Panigale V4 makes more sense for street use because of its larger 1,103cc engine and stronger low-end torque. The V4R is different. It trades street torque for RPM, top-end power, and track-focused performance.

Below 10,000 RPM, the bike can feel soft. Above 10,000 RPM, it becomes something completely different.

Stock Ride Impressions

In stock ECU form, the 2024 V4R feels exactly like what it is: a race bike trying to behave on the street.

Low-speed rideability is not great. The bike runs hot in traffic, the dry clutch is not friendly in stop-and-go riding, and the quickshifter feels clunky unless the engine is spinning above roughly 6,000 RPM. Getting away from a light takes more effort than it would on a standard V4, BMW S1000RR, or M1000RR.

The heat is one of the biggest complaints. The V4R pushes a lot of heat into the rider, especially around the right leg. Ducati gives the bike temperature bars instead of a clear numeric coolant temperature display, which makes the heat even more annoying because the rider can feel the bike cooking but cannot see an exact number on the main screen.

The riding position is also very aggressive. The V4R feels like it wants the rider in a tucked, track-focused position all the time. It is not a bike built around comfort features. There is no cruise control, no heated grips, and no real attempt to make it a relaxed street machine.

But once the road opens up, the bike makes sense.

At high RPM, the V4R is incredible. The engine pulls with a long, flat, violent powerband that keeps building toward the limiter. The brakes are excellent, especially with the upgraded Brembo master cylinder on the test bike. The chassis feels sharp, planted, and focused. The bike is clearly happiest when it is being ridden hard.

Stock GPS Testing

Before flashing the motorcycle, we tested the stock tuning with GPS acceleration data. The goal was to establish a baseline before making ECU changes.

The 60-130 mph and 100-150 mph results being nearly identical tells an interesting story. On a bike with this much top-end power, the 100-150 mph time should normally be quicker than the 60-130 mph time. That is because the V4R is built for high RPM and high-speed acceleration.

The reason the 60-130 mph number does not look more impressive is the second gear start. Starting in second gear puts the V4R lower in the RPM range, where it does not have the same punch as larger-displacement superbikes. The bike needs to climb into the upper rev range before it really starts working.

That is why GPS testing matters. Dyno numbers show peak power, but GPS data shows how the bike uses that power on the road.

Stock Dyno Results

On the dyno, the 2024 Ducati Panigale V4R made 200 rear-wheel horsepower with the original Ducati factory tuning.

That is a respectable number, especially for a 998cc motorcycle. But the curve showed clear restrictions. The mid-range was softened, and the top end had a noticeable limiter effect where the bike was not carrying power the way it should.

That matters because the V4R is not built around low-end torque. Its entire purpose is high-RPM performance. If the factory ECU is restricting the upper rev range, it is restricting the best part of the motorcycle.

The stock bike already makes strong peak power, but the Stage 1+ calibration changes the shape of the curve and unlocks the part of the rev range that makes the V4R special.

Stock V4R vs. 2021 V4R

One of the most useful comparisons was the 2024 V4R against a 2021 V4R tested on the same dyno.

The 2021 bike showed stronger mid-range behavior in some areas, while the 2024 bike was clearly designed to trade some of that middle power for more top-end potential. That matches Ducati's changes to the cams, intake setup, and overall high-RPM focus.

The 2024 V4R feels less friendly on the street than the earlier model because it gives up even more low and mid-range power in exchange for top-end performance. On track, that trade makes sense. On the street, it makes the bike feel lazy until it gets into the part of the tach where it wants to live.

That is the core V4R compromise. It is not trying to be the best street Ducati. It is trying to be the best track Ducati.

Competitor Tune vs. BT Moto Tune

This particular 2024 V4R also came with a competitor's tune, which allowed us to compare three files:

 Original Ducati factory tuning.

 Competitor ECU tuning.

 BT Moto Stage 1+ tuning.

The competitor tune made roughly one wheel horsepower less than the stock Ducati file at peak. It improved some areas of the mid-range, but it did not properly address the new top-end restriction on the 2023-2024 model.

That is important because the 2023-2024 V4R is not the same as the 2019-2022 version. The software is different, the ECU strategy is different, and the engine changes require model-specific development. A copy-and-paste approach from an earlier V4R calibration is not enough.

On the dyno, the BT Moto calibration made power everywhere compared to both the stock file and the competitor file. The largest difference was up top, where the V4R needs it most.

Compared to the competitor tune, the BT Moto file showed nearly 20 wheel horsepower more in the upper range. Compared to the stock file, the difference was more than 20 wheel horsepower in the restricted area.

Why the Rev Range Matters So Much

The V4R is not about low-RPM torque. It is about staying in a huge high-RPM powerband.

With the BT Moto Stage 1+ calibration, the usable rev range is extended to around 16,800-17,000 RPM depending on setup and safety strategy. That gives the rider more room to carry a gear before shifting.

On track, that matters more than most riders realize. An extended powerband can mean:

 Fewer shifts per lap.

 Better drive out of corners.

 Less interruption during acceleration.

 More flexibility between corners.

 More time spent in the engine's strongest range.

Peak horsepower gets attention, but a longer and cleaner powerband is what makes the bike easier to use at speed.

BT Moto Stage 1+ Pump Gas Results

With the BT Moto Stage 1+ calibration, the 2024 V4R made 215 rear-wheel horsepower and about 80 wheel torque on 91 octane pump gas with the Van Demon slip-on exhaust.

That is a major result for a 998cc motorcycle, especially considering this was not a full race exhaust setup. This was a slip-on bike on California pump gas.

The tune did not just add peak power. It improved the entire experience:

 Top-end restrictions were removed.

 Throttle response was improved.

 Torque and load limiters were raised.

 Fueling was recalibrated.

 Ignition strategy was adjusted.

 Cooling fan activation was lowered.

 Quickshifter behavior improved.

 Throttle mapping became smoother and more predictable.

The V4R still feels like a race bike at low RPM. A flash does not turn it into a standard V4. But it does make the bike smoother, sharper, more consistent, and more complete.

Race Gas Testing: MR12 Results

Race gas testing showed even more potential. With MR12 race fuel, the same 2024 V4R setup produced around 224 rear-wheel horsepower and 81 wheel torque.

That is a serious number for a 998cc Ducati with a slip-on exhaust. It also shows why fuel quality matters on a high-compression, high-RPM engine like the V4R.

On pump gas, the calibration has to respect the fuel's knock resistance and real-world safety margin. With MR12, the engine can support a more aggressive strategy and produce more power, especially in the upper RPM range.

Race gas is not for everyone. It is expensive, not practical for street use, and only makes sense for riders who are chasing track performance. But for a V4R owner who actually uses the bike the way Ducati intended, it can be a meaningful upgrade.

Post-Flash Ride Feel

After flashing, the bike immediately felt better on the road.

The biggest change was throttle response. The V4R did not suddenly gain huge low-end torque, because that is not how this engine is built. Instead, the throttle became more direct. A smaller twist of the grip produced more usable response, making the bike feel more awake and less lazy during normal riding.

That is not the same thing as adding power at every low-RPM point. It is about giving the rider more direct control over the throttle plates and torque request. The result is a bike that feels sharper without becoming unpredictable.

Downshifting also felt smoother. The quickshifter was still not BMW-smooth at low RPM, but it felt more confident and less clumsy than stock. At higher RPM, where the V4R is meant to operate, the shift behavior felt much more natural.

Cooling behavior improved as well. The fans were set to activate earlier, helping the bike stay cooler during lower-speed riding and traffic. This does not magically make the V4R a cool-running motorcycle, but every reduction in operating temperature matters on a bike that runs this hot.

Post-Flash GPS Results

After flashing, the GPS results improved clearly.

The 60-130 mph result improved by half a second, even with the second gear start. That is a strong gain, especially because the V4R is not at its best when the run begins low in the RPM range.

The 100-150 mph result is even more important. That test better represents where the V4R actually lives: high speed, high RPM, and heavy load. Dropping from 4.6 seconds to 3.99 seconds shows how much power the bike gained in the part of the rev range that matters most.

Top speed in the same test area also improved from 183 mph to 193 mph. That is not necessarily the absolute top speed of the bike; it is the speed reached in the same available distance. But that makes the comparison even more useful, because it shows how much harder the bike accelerates after the flash.

2024 V4R vs. 2025 Panigale V4

The comparison between the 2024 V4R and the 2025 Panigale V4 is one of the best ways to understand the V4R's personality.

The 2025 Panigale V4 has a larger 1,103cc engine, so it makes much more torque in the low and mid-range. On the street, that makes the standard V4 feel stronger, easier, and more satisfying in normal riding.

The V4R gives up that low-end and mid-range power to gain top-end RPM and track performance. Above 10,000 RPM, the V4R becomes the more special motorcycle. Below that, the standard V4 is easier to live with.

For riders who mostly ride on the street and only do occasional track days, the standard V4 is the smarter choice. For riders who are building a serious track bike and want the homologation engine, the V4R is the better tool.

2024 V4R vs. M1000RR

The BMW M1000RR is one of the V4R's most natural competitors because it is also built around homologation and track performance.

The difference is how the two bikes deliver power. The BMW makes much more low and mid-range power thanks to its ShiftCam system. That makes it easier and more flexible on the street. The Ducati, however, stretches its legs farther with a massive high-RPM powerband.

If the goal is street riding or roll racing, the BMW makes a very strong case because of how much torque and power it has before the Ducati fully wakes up. If the goal is track riding, the V4R's huge top-end range and race-bike character make it extremely difficult to ignore.

Both bikes are fast. The Ducati just feels more like a pure race machine.

What the BT Moto Handheld Tuner Adds

The Stage 1+ calibration is delivered through the BT Moto handheld tuner, which makes flashing the V4R much easier than removing and mailing an ECU.

With the handheld, riders can:

 Flash the bike at home without ECU removal.

 Return the motorcycle to stock when needed.

 Store multiple maps for different fuels or setups.

 Read and clear check engine lights.

 Receive updated files remotely for future hardware changes.

 Use different calibrations for pump gas, race gas, exhaust changes, tire size changes, and track needs.

That flexibility matters on a bike like the V4R. Many owners change exhausts, fuels, gearing, and track setups. A handheld system makes those changes much easier to support without starting over every time the bike changes.

Why Road Testing Matters

Dyno testing is important, but it is not enough by itself.

A dyno can show power, torque, AFR, and restrictions. It can show whether a tune makes more horsepower than stock. But it cannot fully show how the bike feels at low speed, how throttle tip-in behaves in a corner, how the quickshifter feels under real load, or how the bike behaves after heat builds up in normal riding.

That is why we ride the motorcycle before and after flashing. The goal is not just to make a graph look better. The goal is to make the motorcycle better to ride.

On the V4R, that means smoothing out throttle response, improving top-end consistency, reducing harshness, improving shifting behavior, and making the bike more predictable when the rider is asking for power mid-corner.

Predictability is everything on a track bike. When the engine responds the same way every time, the rider can focus on braking, body position, apexes, and exits instead of worrying about what the throttle is going to do.

Final Verdict: Is the 2024 V4R Worth Flashing?

Yes, the 2024 Ducati Panigale V4R benefits heavily from ECU flashing, especially because the 2023-2024 model has clear high-RPM restrictions that hold back the best part of the engine.

Stock, the bike made 200 rear-wheel horsepower and ran 4.6 seconds from 60-130 mph and 4.6 seconds from 100-150 mph. After the BT Moto Stage 1+ flash, it made 215 rear-wheel horsepower on 91 pump gas, ran 4.1 seconds from 60-130 mph, 3.99 seconds from 100-150 mph, and reached 193 mph GPS in the same test area.

With MR12 race gas, the bike showed even more potential at around 224 rear-wheel horsepower.

The V4R is still not the best Ducati for street use. It runs hot, has weak low-RPM power, uses a dry clutch, and demands more maintenance than a standard V4. For street riders, the Panigale V4 is usually the smarter choice.

But for track-focused riders, the V4R is special. Once the restrictions are removed and the powerband is opened up, the 2024 V4R becomes the motorcycle it was supposed to be: a high-RPM Ducati race bike with a license plate.
