The middleweight sportbike class has changed a lot. It is no longer just about 600cc inline-fours screaming to 15,000 RPM. Today, bikes like the Triumph Daytona 660 and Yamaha R7 are trying to give riders a more usable version of the sportbike formula.
Both bikes are around the same price point. Both are sporty without being full race replicas. Both are meant to work on the street, in the canyons, and at the occasional track day. But the way they make power is completely different.
The Yamaha R7 uses Yamaha's familiar 689cc CP2 parallel-twin engine. It has strong low-end torque, a simple character, and a lightweight chassis. The Triumph Daytona 660 uses a 660cc inline-triple that revs higher, makes more peak power, and has a broader top-end pull.
On paper, that already gives the Triumph an advantage. But paper specs are only part of the story. That is why we tested the Daytona 660 with stock ECU mapping, GPS acceleration, dyno pulls, partial throttle testing, and then our BT Moto Stage 1+ Performance Calibration with handheld tuner.
After comparing the data, the result is pretty clear: the Yamaha R7 is a good bike, but the Triumph Daytona 660 is the stronger performance platform.
The biggest difference between these two bikes is the engine.
The Yamaha R7's 689cc parallel-twin is based on the same CP2 platform used in the MT-07. It is known for low-end torque, simple reliability, and a fun street personality. It does not need a lot of RPM to feel alive, and that is part of why people like it.
The Daytona 660 is different. It uses Triumph's inline-three-cylinder engine, but this is not just the same 660 engine from the older Trident or Tiger Sport with bodywork added. Triumph changed a lot on the Daytona version, including the pistons, head, compression, valving, airbox, and overall engine character.
The result is a 660 that feels more like a proper sportbike engine. It still has usable torque, but it also carries power much harder up top than the R7. That matters because once the Yamaha starts running out of RPM, the Triumph keeps pulling.
That is the main reason the Daytona 660 walks away in the upper part of the rev range. The R7 has the better low-RPM grunt, but the Daytona has the stronger complete powerband.
In stock ECU form, the Daytona 660 is already a solid motorcycle. The throttle is linear, the bike pulls cleanly to redline, and there are no major flat spots in the RPM range. It does not feel heavily restricted the way some larger sportbikes do from the factory.
The biggest thing the Daytona needs is more throttle response. The engine is only 660cc, so it does not have massive low-end power. Triumph helped that with short gearing, which makes the bike feel more lively than the displacement suggests, but there is still room to make the bike respond harder at smaller throttle openings.
That is where tuning makes the biggest difference. Peak horsepower matters, but the way the bike responds at 25%, 50%, and 75% throttle is what changes how it feels in real riding.
The R7, by comparison, has a naturally punchier low-end feel because of its twin-cylinder engine. It feels good coming away from a stop and rolling through slower corners. But once the revs climb, the Yamaha cannot match the Daytona's top-end pull.
For GPS acceleration testing, the Daytona 660 was tested from 20-100 mph. This is a useful range for middleweight bikes because it shows how the motorcycle accelerates through the meat of the powerband instead of only measuring a perfect launch.
Stock ECU mapping produced a 7.5-second 20-100 mph result with a second gear start.

That result is important because the R7 had the advantage of a first gear start, while the Daytona 660 was tested from second. Even with that disadvantage, the Daytona was quicker.
That tells us the Daytona is not just making a bigger number on paper. It is actually putting that extra power to work on the road.
On the dyno, the Daytona 660 made 89 rear-wheel horsepower and 48 lb-ft of torque with the stock ECU file.
That is impressive because Triumph's crank horsepower claim is in the low-to-mid 90s. Seeing 89 horsepower at the tire means the engine is delivering a very strong percentage of its claimed output to the rear wheel.

Peak-to-peak, the tune added around 3 wheel horsepower. That may not sound huge, but peak numbers do not tell the full story on a bike like this.
The gains are more important across the curve, especially in the upper RPM range and at partial throttle. The tuned file smooths out the power curve, adds RPM, improves throttle response, and lets the engine carry power longer before shifting.
Most riders do not ride at 100% throttle all the time. They ride at 10%, 25%, 50%, and 75% throttle constantly. That is why partial throttle testing matters so much.
At 25% throttle, the Daytona 660 showed a massive improvement after the BT Moto flash. The stock bike is smooth, but it needs more response. The tuned bike feels more awake, more eager, and more connected to the rider's hand.
That matters in real situations:
• Pulling away from stoplights: The bike feels more lively without needing excessive RPM.
• Rolling through traffic: Small throttle inputs produce more useful response.
• Corner exits: The bike drives forward with less delay.
• Track riding: The wider powerband means fewer shifts and cleaner acceleration.
This is one of the biggest reasons a flash can make a smaller-displacement motorcycle feel dramatically better without needing a giant peak horsepower gain. The rideability is where the real difference shows up.
After flashing the Daytona 660 with the BT Moto Stage 1+ calibration, we repeated the 20-100 mph GPS test.
The tuned bike ran 7.3 seconds from 20-100 mph, again with a second gear start. That is two tenths quicker than stock and roughly one full second quicker than the R7 result, even though the R7 had the benefit of a first gear start.

That is a strong result for the Triumph. The Daytona is already faster than the R7 in stock ECU form, and the tune widens the gap further.
Top speed testing showed roughly 128 mph stock and around 130 mph post-flash in the test area, with the bike still climbing in both cases. Based on the way it was pulling, the real maximum GPS speed is likely around the mid-130s depending on rider size, conditions, and available space.
The dyno comparison is where the difference becomes obvious.
When comparing a similarly modified and tuned R7 against the Daytona 660, the Yamaha does well early. The R7 is stronger down low and holds an advantage up to around 7,500 RPM. That makes sense because the CP2 twin is built around low and mid-range torque.
After that, the Daytona 660 takes over. Once the Triumph gets into the upper part of the rev range, it walks away from the R7. At peak, the difference is nearly 40 wheel horsepower, and the Triumph keeps revving after the R7 is already done.
That is the biggest deciding factor in this comparison. The R7 feels good at lower RPM, but the Daytona 660 has the powerband of a more serious sportbike.
This does not mean the R7 is a bad motorcycle. It is still one of the most popular middleweight sportbikes for a reason.
The R7 is lighter, simpler, and has a very approachable engine. Its CP2 twin is easy to ride, easy to understand, and fun in normal street riding. For riders who care more about low-speed torque, mechanical simplicity, and Yamaha reliability, the R7 still makes a lot of sense.
The R7 also has a more focused chassis feel than many bikes in the class. It is not the most powerful option, but it is narrow, predictable, and confidence-inspiring. For a newer track rider, that can matter more than peak horsepower.
The issue is that the R7 starts running out of engine sooner. Once the pace picks up, the Daytona 660 has a clear advantage.
The Daytona 660 wins in the areas most riders associate with sportbike performance.
• More horsepower: The Daytona makes significantly more power than the R7.
• More RPM: The Triumph keeps pulling after the Yamaha signs off.
• Better acceleration: GPS testing shows the Daytona is faster from 20-100 mph.
• Stronger tuned results: The BT Moto flash improves response, power delivery, and acceleration.
• More exotic engine character: The triple has a more unique sound and feel than the parallel twin.
• Better top-end performance: The Daytona feels more like a true sportbike at higher RPM.
The Daytona also looks more expensive than it is. For around the same price point as the R7, it gives riders a more powerful engine, a more interesting sound, and stronger acceleration.

That makes the tune easier to live with, especially for riders who plan to change exhausts, filters, gearing, or other supporting parts later.
If the question is which bike is easier to ride at lower RPM, the Yamaha R7 has a case. Its twin-cylinder engine is simple, punchy, and friendly. It is a good bike for riders who want a lightweight sportbike that does not demand high RPM all the time.
But if the question is which bike actually wins as a middleweight sportbike, the answer is the Daytona 660.
The Triumph is faster, stronger up top, more exciting in the rev range, and responds extremely well to tuning. It has the engine character the R7 is missing, and the data shows that it accelerates harder in the real world.
The R7 is still fun. The Daytona is faster.
The Yamaha R7 is a solid middleweight sportbike, but it is not the performance winner here. Its strength is low-end torque, simplicity, and chassis feel. That makes it a good street and beginner-track platform, but it does not have the horsepower or RPM to match the Triumph.
The Triumph Daytona 660 is the better all-around performance bike. Stock, it is already quicker than the R7 in GPS testing. Tuned, it becomes even sharper, with better throttle response, a smoother curve, stronger upper-RPM pull, and a wider usable powerband.
For riders who want the stronger middleweight sportbike, the Daytona 660 wins.
